JJ_Arnold_Featured_AlumniJ.J. Arnold is a 2010 graduate of the Communication Graduate Program, who spent her time at SDSU conducting qualitative research on the anti-drinking, anti-smoking youth sub-culture of Straight Edge. After graduating, her research focus translated well to her work at Rescue Social Change Group, a marketing and research company that takes on clients motivated toward positive social change. While RescueSCG has marketing campaigns for anti-obesity, anti-violence and many other causes, a large focus of RescueSCG is anti-tobacco. To market to youth, RescueSCG targets different subcultures (e.g. hipster young adults, teen rockers, young adult partiers, LGBT community) who are shown to have high smoking rates, and communicates anti-tobacco messaging through events (e.g. art shows, concerts, parties). As the Research Assistant, J.J. Arnold recruits, hires and trains teams across the nation to conduct surveys in areas where the campaigns take place. The surveys are then analyzed to evaluate the influence of each campaign on the smoking rate of its targeted subculture. Through managing the data collection from all anti-tobacco campaigns in multiple cities, J.J. has had the honor of working with UCSF’s prestigious Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, and the Southern Nevada Health District.

J.J. says SDSU’s School of Communication provided the tools to make all of this possible., giving her the research experience, the motivation and the passion essential to her current work toward positive social change.
