Study Abroad
Health Communication & Culture in Thailand January 2027
Health Communication in Thailand provides SDSU students with an opportunity to engage with Thai health communication faculty and students, Thai hospital staff members, and Thai public health professionals to understand how culture impacts the human experience of health, illness, and well-being, with a specific focus on the communicative constitution of health. Students will also evaluate public health campaigns with a visit to the learning center of the nation’s public health agency. Students will be required to make field note entries about each site engagement to record their observations, questions, and experiences. They will have opportunities to ask SWU students and faculty about cultural meanings of what they observe, which they will also document in their field notes. The two-week intensive will serve as a cultural comparison foil for coursework during the regular semester for students enrolled in COMM 427: Health Communication and Cultural Communities.

Study Abroad Information for Communication Students
What is the Process to Study Abroad?
Planning to study abroad requires coordination with your academic advisor (if you plan to complete your major/minor requirements) and your global education advisor.
It is important to discuss your study abroad plans with your academic advisor(s) as early as possible. Early planning for study abroad is fundamental to allowing you to stay on track to graduate and not get behind.
- Review your degree audit
- Adjustments to the SDSU degree “map” to better accommodate study abroad
(e.g. moving major electives into one semester and saving general education
courses) - Considerations in selecting classes and keeping in mind prerequisites
- How courses you take abroad will meet major or minor requirements
- Best time to go abroad (e.g. summer or semester; sophomore or junior year
